Tazewell County adopted the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC) on September 1, 1973. The Ordinance defines provisions which shall control all matters concerning the construction, alteration, addition, repair, removal, demolition, use, location, condemnation, occupancy and maintenance of all buildings, and all other functions which pertain to the installation of all systems vital to all building and structures and their service equipment as defined by the Uniform Statewide Building Code, and shall apply to existing and proposed building or structures in the County.
The provisions of the USBC are based on nationally recognized model building and fire codes published by the International Code Council, Inc. As of March 1, 2012, Tazewell County enforces the 2009 Edition of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, as adopted, from the International Code Council, Inc., for the purpose of establishing minimum regulations to govern the construction and maintenance of buildings and structures.
The building inspectors office issues permits for work done in Tazewell County, the Towns of Tazewell, Richlands, Pocahontas, and Cedar Bluff. (The Town of Bluefield has a Building Official and all permitting is done through that office.)
