Mission Statement: To Provide for the welfare and safety of the surrounding communities, its citizens and environment while enforcing the law and maintaining safe responsive emergency services throughout the County of Tazewell, Virginia.
Two officers patrol the County 8am to 4pm Monday thru Friday excluding holidays. During the weekend or holidays there is one officer on call for emergency traffic only. Tazewell County Special Police have no jurisdiction inside of town limits with the exception of tags and shots. Any litter or animal control complaint inside town limits will be handled by the town police department.
Dog Requirements:
Any animal over four months old in Tazewell County will have and display current tags. Any dog not wearing a collar bearing a license tag of the proper calendar year shall not be considered licesnsed. License tax on dogs shall be due on January 1 and not later than January 31 of each year.

Dogs trained and used as guide dogs for vision or hearing impaired person will have a license, but will not be charged a tax. Payments are to be made at the County Treasurer's Office in the Courthouse floor 2A. You must take a copy of the rabies vacaniaction with you. If the dog's license is lost, destroyed, or stolen the owner shall present the original license receipt to the treasurer and make an application for a copy. A fee of $1.00 will be charged for a duplicate license.
Impoundment of Dogs:
All dogs shall be deemed personal property and may be subject of larceny and malicious or unlawful tresspass and the owners thereof may maintain any action for the killing of, injury to or unlawful detention or use of such dogs as in the case of other personal property. All owners of dogs shall keep and maintain dogs under their supervision and confined to the owner's property by leash, command, or fence (to include "invisible fences"). Failure of the owner to maintain control of their animal may result in the impoundment of the offending dog and/or legal charges under the State or County Code. The owner may claim such dog with photo id and obtain possesion by paying the license fee for unlicensed dogs and the sum of $3.00 per day or a minimum of $5.00 dollars whichever is greater, for licensed and unlicensed dogs, as compensation for the keep of such dog. If the legal owner has failed to pay the charges due no license for the ensuing year shall be issued until all charges are paid.
Routine Calls:
Any other reports of animals after duty hours will be placed on the officer's log and handled during normal duty hours. Due to a change in the law, Special Police can no longer pick up stray cats. Calls referring to wildlife should be directed to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Complaints of service should be directed to the Director or County Administrator.
